Unit Cost of Production Calculator Workshops coming to you!

The BC Ministry of Agriculture has developed a new Cow/Calf Unit Cost of Production Calculator and is collaborating with the BC Cattlemen’s Association to try to get into the hands of ranchers and provide some “hands on” experience with using it.

Many producers are familiar with the Cost of Production surveys that the BC Cattlemen’s Association and Ministry of Agriculture have done in the past. This Unit Cost of Production Calculator builds on that previous work and takes it one step further, converting the information into a single number for an individual ranch that ranchers can compare directly to the market price for their calves.

Unit Cost of Production or “UCOP” is the cost to produce a hundredweight of weaned calf, and it distills both the production and financial factors of a cow/calf ranch into a single measurement of the profitability of that ranch. While it is a simple and useful concept, it takes some time and effort to run all the calculations. The Unit Cost of Production Calculator is designed with easy input cells, and the calculations are complete. Sounds simple, right? It is, but unfortunately it does take some time to dig up those numbers.

Click here for more detailed information, dates and locations.  Workshop facilitators are asking producers interested in participating to gather the required facts and figured beforehand so that they can leave the workshop with ranch-specific information without additional work.  You won't be asked share your information at the workshop; the value in the workshop will be using your own ranch information to generate your own Unit Cost of Production. Any group discussion of numbers and analysis during the workshop will involve the numbers from the example ranches in the “Costs and Returns of Sample Ranching Businesses in Various Areas of British Columbia – 2013”.

If you are not able to attend a workshop close to you, the training may be available as a webinar at a later date.
